Papers of the Conservation Council of Virginia, 1968-1974.

The collection contains correspondence, minutes, financial statements, by-laws, reports, newsletters, and policy statements of the central organization, as well as correspondence & publications of member groups and special committees. A large segment deals with Virginia legislation affecting the environment and state agencies concerned with environmental control, particularly the Virginia State Water Control Board, the Virginia Air Pollution Control Board, and the Virginia Governor's Council on the environment. Major topics include strip mining, water quality control, river basin planning, land development, preservation of scenic, historic, and environmentally unique areas, pollution of the James River, and controversial dams, bridges, highways, resorts and electric power plants. Included are reports from the first Water Quality Institute, Richmond, 1974, and a complaint filed against Melvin Laird and the Army Corps of Engineers over the proposed construction of the [Gathright] dam on the Jackson River.
