[Account book of John Winthrop, 1786-1803].

Vellum bound account book for Boston merchant John Winthrop with debit and credits concerning goods purchased from Winthrop's rope walk. Entries include tattow, coil spun yarn, cordage of different sizes, wormline, etc. Paste down has "John Winthrop's October 1786". Pages one through five, two-thirds of pages six/seven, and pages ten/eleven are missing. Since the accounts continue (in a different hand) for three years after John Winthrop's death, the account book was obviously given to a business partner or to one of his sons prior to its acquisition by Asa Tyler. There are 370 outlines of individual's feet (see provenance note): 91 outlines were made on empty pages after Winthrop's accounts while 279 of the foot outlines were traced over accounts by Winthrop; however, little information is obscurred. Many of the outlines include the customer's name and some are dated.
