Charles Scribner, 1821-1871, was a partner in the publishing firm of Baker & Scribner, 1846-1871, and carried on alone after Baker's death in 1850. He formed Scribner & Welford in 1857. Charles Scribner's Sons was established in 1870, the same year SCRIBNER'S MONTHLY began. His son Charles, 1854-1930, became president in 1875. He began SCRIBNER'S MAGAZINE in 1887.
