He tells Mr. Markhman that he was very upset that he didn't get to see him, while he was in California. He mentions his happy memories of their other meetings. He also sends him a book with his compliments and wishes he could have done more for him, during his stay.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
