Construction of the Senate Avenue YMCA began in October 1912 at the intersection of Michigan Street and Senate Avenue. Booker T. Washington dedicated the building on 13 July 1913. Lionel F. Artis (1895-1971) was born in Paris, Illinois and moved to Indianapolis as a child. He served in the army during World War I. He attended Butler University, the University of Chicago, and Indiana University. A civic leader in Indianapolis, Artis served on the board of directors of 23 organizatations.
