Sends Markham c copy of the "New Age" which contains a view articles of Grierson, talking about the poem "The Man With the Hoe". Just came back from Paris where he made contact with a translater for "Valley of Shadows". He also tells him that a translation in german and russian is being negotiated.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
