The collection consists of a single account ledger book detailing David Mitchell's business transactions from 1839 to 1868. The ledger records Mitchell's accounts in considerable detail, including the job undertaken or hardware provided, costs charged, and payment received. Mitchell also kept a thorough account of the payments made to his employees, including his apprentices. Like many Nantucket Islanders, David Mitchell had a speculative interest in the booming whaling trade. He purchased owner's shares in several whaling voyages, including those of the ship Ocean in 1843 and the ship Mohawk in 1858.
