Thanks Mr. Markham for address to the Forum at the Walt Whitman's celebration. Was quite worried when he realized that Markham was not there at the appointed time but all ended well when Markham finally entered the room.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
