Samuel Sturgis that day and his failure as a commander, written in response and opposition to the appointment of Sturgis as superintendent of the Soldiers' Home in Washington, D.C., as well as printed material relating to the battle; speeches and other material pertaining to the life in a prisoner of war camp, particularly Andersonville, memoir (1906) by Gotthilf Eberhard on the 72nd Ohio Volunteers at the Battle of Shiloh, and reunions of the 72nd after the war; Gessner's prescription book (1864 Apr. 10 - Oct. 8), later used as a personal journal; general correspondence dealing with Gessner's appointment as Fremont's postmaster, his activities in the Republican Party, postal matters, and the affairs of fraternal organizations to which he belonged; and correspondence with family members, household bills, and newspaper clippings concerning local people and events.

Samuel Davis Sturgis (born June 11, 1822, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania – died September 28, 1889, St. Paul, Minnesota) was a senior officer of the United States Army.
