Letter 1900, June 15, New York City to Mr. Edwin Markham, Staten Island / New York Journal. 1900.

Mr. Block askes Mr. Markham to write a poem for the editorial section. It for a discussion that askes whether or not a rich man can go to heaven. If its possible for this miracle to occur or what would a rich man have to do to make this happen. He mentions how long it should be and when he would need it by. He would like Mr. Markham to let him know if it is possible for him to do this. He doesn't want this to interfere with the other poem that he is writing. was impossible for them, then they would not be able to print it because it came out in book form.He says that the Christmas poem is only worth $60.00 and should be shorter. He also would like Mr. Markham to write a poem for the new century issue. He suggest that could be one about prophecy of the conditions that will exist in the year 2000. also like to meet with him this week.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
