General description of the collection: The Willis Dale Crittenberger photograph collection is a huge collection, which thoroughly covers the apex of the career of Lieutenant General Crittenberger. Few photos date from before WWII, except for a grouping taken in Manila, Philippines in 1933. There are some photos of armor and armor training from 1935 to 1940 and photos of the 2nd Armored Division and 3rd Armored Corps in 1942. Also, photos of Bob Hope and United Service Organization (U.S.O.) troupe. Several albums include excellent official photos of the war in Italy from May 1944 to August 1945. There is heavy coverage of activities in the Caribbean Command when he was the commanding general from 1945-1948. Also, some photos illustrate his involvement with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1948. The photos covering his tenure at 1st Army from 1950 to 1952 are extensive. Some photos cover his post retirement activities up to about 1970.

Willis Dale Crittenberger (1890-1980) was born in Anderson, Indiana. After graduating from West Point in 1913, he commissioned in the cavalry. He graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1925 and the Army War College in 1930. He made brigadier general in July 1941 and major general in February 1942.
