George tells Markham that "The Independent" will be coming "The Newsbook". They are going to try and show the world what they are trying to do. They discuss "marshalling thier forces" and giving "due credit and announcement of the Book'. He will write Markham after everything settles down.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
