This collection consists of outgoing and incoming correspondence of the Van Dycks, much of it from other missionaries and from a Chinese leader, Mr. Liu. There are also reports, official releases and publications of the Board of Foreign Missions. The turmoil and disturbances of the Japanese invasion before World War II, the civil war following it, and the impact of these upon the church are depicted.

David Bevier Van Dyck, Sr., (1892-1963) and his wife Anna Foster Richardson (b. 1895) were appointed by the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. to Kiangan Mission in China in 1918; to Hwei Yuan, 1920-1933, and to Showchow, 1933-1940, doing evangelistic, educational and administrative work. The first Presbyterian missionaries to Japan arrived in Yokohama in 1859.
