Lewis H. Machen notebook, 1817-1830.

Collection consists of one bound holographic notebook containing accounts and expenses of Lewis H. Machen while he was living and working in Washington, D.C., 1817-1843. Some expenses were related to a home he was building on Maryland Avenue. Of interest in the notebook is Machen's account of a conversation with Secretary of the Senate, Walter S. Lowrie, in October 1828. Lowrie expressed his disapproval of Machen's published criticisms of Andrew Jackson before the election of 1828.
