The collection is formed largely by the research and writings used by Gordon Huntington Harper for his dissertation and published volume on the relationship of Cardinal John Henry Newman and the scientist, William Froude during the period 1845-1864. The papers include typescript of chapters and of letters from the correspondence of Newman and Froude. Other items are proofs from the published volume, "Cardinal Newman and William Froude, F.R.S., reviews, articles, and other researches. Letters to Harper are from colleagues and family related to the publication. A few personal items complete the collection, and these include travel documents, receipts, commencement programs, and diplomas.

John Henry Newman was born in London on February 21, 1801, the eldest of six children. His early education was at the Ealing School, a private boarding school. Biographical Note: Gordon Huntington Harper was an author and instructor in English, The Johns Hopkins University. He was born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Oct. 14, 1904. After receiving the B.A. degree from Princeton in 1927, he studied for two years in Europe, partly at Cambridge University where he pursued his particular interest in the Oxford Movement.
