California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Michael Monahan was a poet and editor. Born in County Cork, Ireland, he moved to the United States and became a reporter and, later, editor. He wrote poetry and non-fiction, including works on Jean d'Arc and Heinrich Heine, and toured extensively as a lecturer. He founded the journals Papyrus and Phoenix.
