Minnie Gresham Machen notebook 1852-1904.

Collection consists of one, bound, holographic notebook of American author, Minnie Gresham Machen. Included is an account of a religious service held at the Seamen's Church in Boston, 1852, most likely written by Mrs. Machen's husband, Arthur Webster Machen. Mrs. Machen's writings are mostly on religious subjects. Included are her reminiscences of Sidney Lanier used by Lanier's biographer, Edwin Mims. Collection consists of one, bound, holographic notebook of Minnie Gresham Machen. The first entry in the notebook is a lengthy description of a charismatic, religious service held at the Seamen's Church, Boston, in 1852. A Father Taylor led the service and two sermons are detailed. Most likely, this account was written by Mrs. Machen's husband, Arthur Webster Machen. Some of Mrs. Machen's writings in the notebook were later published in "The Central Presbyterian." Mrs. Machen's reminiscences of Sidney Lanier, later used in Edwin Mim's biography, are included in the notebook. A final entry is a brief essay on poetry.

Sidney Lanier was a noted Southern poet and composer, born in Macon, Georgia, on Feb. 3, 1842. He graduated from Oglethorpe University and voluntarily fought for the Confederacy as a member of the 2nd Battalion Infantry (Georgia), and the Signal Corps. It is likely that Lanier contracted tuberculosis during his stay at at Union prison camp, and the complications from that disease would affect Lanier his entire life. Biographical Note: Minnie Gresham Machen was a writer of religious literature. She was the daughter of John J. Gresham and Mary Gresham of Macon, GA. She married Arthur Webster Machen (1827-1915) amd they resided in Baltimore city where Mr. Machen practiced law. Mrs. Machen contributed articles to religious journals and published "The Bible in Browning" in 1903.
