He reports on a visit from a friend of Virgil's Mr. Hawkes. He provided copies of the documents related to the Woodhouse case and others. He now fully appreciates what the family has been up against. He admires the letters Virgil has written in reply to Ruth LaPrade's attacks. He believes that she was responsible for an ugly article in the Pasadena Star-News. She was unable to enlist Millard in her campaign. He is surprised to learn from Mr. Hawkes that Virgil was unaware that Millard was writing a biography of Edwin Markham. He requests pwritten permission to quote from his letters regarding his poems, since Virgil is now in a position of guardianship over his affairs. Bailey Millard (1859-1941) was born in Markesan, Wisconsin. Much of his education was obtained as a printer's devil and tramp printer. He worked his way west through a succession of newspaper and printing shops. In the 1890s he was city editor or literary editor of the San Francisco Call and the Examiner, and in 1918-1919 was managing editor of the San Francisco Evening Bulletin .
