[Letters to John Albert Broadus from L.H. Shuck] 1857 May 4-June 3]. 1857.

May 3, Oxford Female College, N.C. Asked Broadus to recommend him as a qualified teacher. May 25, Oxford, N.C. Wrote about his affliction: "For six years have I been suffering from the kidney disease and although I am sometimes induced to think that it is gradually abating, yet a fresh attack generally destroys every hope." Thanked Broadus for his kindness and told him that he had accepted "the principalship of Beulah Male Institute." June 3, Warrenton, N.C. Asked Broadus to secure him "employment as agent for foreign missions for one month, to labor in some portions of this state. I spent 8 years in China and feel interested and would like such employment provided sufficient inducement be offered." In pencil, in Broadus's handwriting: "What do you think?"
