[Letter] 1856 Aug 22, Richmond [Va.] to [John Albert Broadus] / James Thomas. 1856.

Urged Broadus to accept the pastorate of the Leigh Street [Baptist] Church, Richmond. Wrote "I know Charlottesville is a very delightful and a very important place, perhaps none more so, in some respects. Your present post is in my judgment exceedingly important. Still, you have a rising family which must be provided for if you can, or you deny the faith and every laborer is worthy of his hire." Broadus was chaplain of the University of Virginia in 1856. In 1859, he became professor of homiletics and interpretation of the New Testament at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
