Photographs include portraits, informal photos of Koelz with others and at his home in Chelsea, Mich.; also photos from his travels in Afghanistan, India, and Iran in the period 1930s-1950s; photos from his participation in the MacMillan Arctic Expedition (1925); photos of collected bird specimens, art work, and Tibetan tankas; and motion pictures of collecting expedition to North India in 1936.

Walter Norman Koelz (1895-1989), zoologist and botanist, was born in Waterloo, Michigan, on September 11, 1895. He received an A.B. degree from Olivet College in 1915, and his A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan in 1917 and 1920, respectively. In 1919, Koelz held the position of Curator of Fishes at the Museum of Zoology at Michigan. From 1919 to 1927, and again in 1930, Koelz worked for the United States Bureau of Fisheries.
