[Letters] 1854, Beaumont to "Dear Bro. Broadus" [John Albert Broadus concerning Lewis H. Shuck] / Jas. L. Jones. 1854.

June 19. Upon learning that the faculty [of the University of Virginia] proposed to appoint a "state student," Jones inquired into the "properity of Lewis Shuck making application for the appointment. He is literally without a home at all, he fulfills in an eminent degree all the other qualifications required as he is of good moral character, intelligent, ardently desirious of a good liberal education ... His father as you are aware, has for the past 18 years been living in a foreign land, on a salary that barely afforded a support, and consequently has laid up just nothing at all for his children. He can return to Wake Forest where he would graduate next June, but I think it would be pretty much a year thrown away, as the honors of the Institution are of little worth." June 27. Writes that Shuck has been placed in his care, that "in truth, his home is here in Orange at my house. There is no doubt about the pecuniary inability both of his father, and himself to incur the expense of a course of study even for one session at the University." Shuck was the son of J. Lewis Shuck, first Baptist missionary to China. He graduated from Wake Forest College, from which he received the degrees of A.B., A.M. and D.D. [Baptist Cyclopedia, v. 2, 1056].
