[Letter] 1854 May 13, Sacramento to "Dear Bro. Broadus" [John Albert Broadus] / Lewis Shuck. 1854.

Urged Broadus to accept the call to the Baptist Church of Sacramento. "I have accepted their invitation to supply until their pastor can be had. I shall preach morning and night to the Church and afternoons to the Chinese. You and I could, I think, cooperate to advantage in this city in behalf of the Master's cause both among our own people and among the Chinese. Living here is very expensive except clothing (ready made) and vegetables. Should you come it would be well (as we did) to bring a good supply of clothing, also sheets and pillow cases. Having a number of slaves ourselves, we brought one of our own along, a valuable cook, washer and ironer. She is much attached to her mistress and quite contented and is not likely to leave us, although she knows all about being in a free state."
