The collection consists of records of the ALCMA and the ELC-CAR. ALCMA records include correspondence of Superintendents Lloyd Smith and John Gorder and Treasurers Olin K. Sletto and David Johnson, as well as minutes of the association meetings. ELC-CAR records include correspondence of Presidents Ellie Barbou, Bernard Zama, and Marc Bega and Secretary Thomas Christensen as well as financial records. There are also reports, subject files, and files of projects that the DWMIC supported. The files were created by the offices of Sorenson, Hesterman, and Knutson.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Representatives from each of the constitutent churches formed the Joint Union Committee in 1950 to effect the merger. Presidents of the constituent bodies at the merger were Henry F.
