Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Files 1973-1988.

The records were kept by the administrators of the Division for World Mission and Inter-Church Cooperation (DWMIC) of The American Lutheran Church (TALC) and record the relationship of the DWMIC with the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY). Among these administrators were Morris A. Sorenson, Jr., and Mark W. Thomsen, directors; Lowell Hesterman, assistant director; and James L. Knutson, Secretary for Africa and Madagascar. Box 1 contains correspondence with officers of the EECMY. The officers included are President Emmanuel Abraham, General Secretary Gudina Tumsa, Associate General Secretaries Robert J. Miller, Tarekegn Adebo and Olav Saeveraas, Finance Advisor Rolf Berglund, and Finance Directors Berhe Beyene and Tamiru Hundessa. The associate general secretaries worked directly with personnel issues for TALC. Box 2 contains minutes of the General Assembly and the Executive Committee. Box 3 contains financial records (budgets and audits) and subject files, with the subject files continued in Box 4. Subject files include reports and correspondence about special projects, consultations, and institutions. Also included in Box 4 are records of the North Ethiopia Synod (NES, originally Wollo-Tigre Synod), the synod located in the area in which TALC worked. The NES records contain correspondence, minutes, financial records, and statistics. The correspondence is with the NES executive secretary, Yalem Tesfa Mengistu. Minutes are for the Administrative Committee, which conducted business between annual conventions. Financial records include audits, budgets, and financial statements. Finally, Box 5 contains records of an ecumenical organization, the Christian Relief and Development Association (CRDA). These records pertain to food relief efforts during a drought in Ethiopia in the early 1980s. Both the ALC and the EECMY were represented in the CRDA. CRDA records include audits, minutes, newsletters, and reports.
