Has received "The Man With the Hoe" and thanks him and Harriet Ware for introducing him to Markham. Goes on to say that he was all his life invovled with taking care of ill people which he enjoyed and invites him to come for a rest since he is not feeling well lately.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
