California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Kenney is a Mormon author and historian. From the guide to the Scott G. Kenney research materials, 1820-1984, (L. Tom Perry Special Collections) Ina Coolbrith was born as Josephine Donna Smith (niece of Mormon Church founder Joseph Smith) in Nauvoo, Illinois in 1841or 1842 (accounts differ).
