Contains the following type of materials: photographs. Covers the following wars: World War I (WWI), World War II (WWII). Contains photographs of the following military unit: Ninth Army. General description of the collection: The William H. Simpson photograph collection includes the personal photos of General Simpson, which cover much of his life from his years at West Point until well after his retirement. There are only a few miscellaneous photos to illustrate his pre-WWII years; to include the U.S. military Academy and WWI. The collection is strong on activities during WWII, including his commands at Camp Wolters, Texas in 1941; 12th Corps and Fourth Army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. A large part of the collection deals with the Ninth Army in the European Theater of WWII, and shows many important visitors to headquarters, as well as routine activities of an Army headquarters. The collection is very strong on photos of General Simpson, both portraits and candid shots, but mostly from the 1940s. Family and friend photos which postdate his retirement in 1946.

William H. Simpson was a United States (U.S.) Army officer who served as chief of staff of the 33rd Division, American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.) during World War I (WWI). He then commanded Camp Walters, Texas. During World War II (WWII) he was with the 35th and 30th Infantry Divisions and was a commanding general of the 9th Army from 1944-1945 and of the 2nd Army to 1946.
