Mite Boxes n.d.

Mite boxes were introduced as one means by which to collect contributions for mission projects. This series consists of two Thank-Offering boxes. The first thankoffering occurred in 1889 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the General Synod's Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Society (WHFMS). At the first thankoffering, the boxes were sold for a small fee, but in later years were distributed free of charge, except for postage. Each synodical society was to set aside one Sunday during the year for Thankoffering Sunday. The mite boxes were designated Thank-Offering boxes to distinguish them from other WHFMS mite boxes, which the General Literature Committee sold for three cents. Each November meeting of the auxiliary societies was designated the Thank-Offering meeting. At this meeting the thank-offering boxes were collected. One of the boxes in this series is a general thank-offering box dated 1907 and is in very good condition. The other box, a pink box, was for participation of mission bands in the annual Thankoffering. Mission bands were mission organizations for children. This box is in fairly good condition except for one side being detached. In GS 16/5/5 Pamphlets, box 3, folder 1, there are additional materials related to thankofferings. There are copies of the orders of service for Thankoffering services and orders of service for mission bands' participation in November Thankoffering meetings. In GS 16/5/3/6 Miscellaneous Publications, there is an anecdotal history of the Thank-Offering written in 1907 by the secretary of the Thank-Offering department.
