This record group consists of various records of the Adjutant General of Michigan and accumulated by the Adjutant General Division of the Dept. of Military Affairs. The record group includes: muster and payrolls of State Troops (1905-1916), listing name, rank, period of service, daily allowance, and amount paid each trooper; records of the Michigan Naval Brigade (1905-1919) containing Naval Board minutes, and muster and payrolls listing name, rank, ration tally, days entitled pay, and amount paid each brigade troop; payrolls of troops in aid of civil authorities (1912-1914), listing unit, name, rank, period of service, rate of pay, compensation due, and signature of recipient; inventories of equipment (1898-1918); and Victory Medal applications (1920-1924).

Michigan's military establishment formally began with an August 30, 1805 act that provided for a territorial militia. A state militia was established in 1838. Public Act 147 of 1846 completely re-organized the state militia. Public Act 198 of 1893 officially designated the militia as the Michigan National Guard.
