Contains the following type of materials: photographs. General description of the collection: The E.H. Sibert photograph collection is so named because it was donated by one E.H. Sibert. The collection, with one small exception, deals entirely with the construction of the Panama Canal from 1907 to 1913. The photos, though delicate, are an outstanding visual coverage of the building of the canal. The one exception is the seven photos of the Battleship U.S.S. Maine, shown under reclamation in a cofferdam in Havana Harbor, Cuba in 1911.

USS Maine (BB/2C), an armored battle ship, was blown up in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. A court of inquiry was unable to obtain evidence regarding the cause of the ship's destruction. In August 1910, Congress authorized the raising of the ship. The hull was refloated and towed into the Gulf of Mexico where it was sunk with honors on March 16, 1912.
