Lutheran Church in America. : Division for World Mission and Ecumenism. Subject Files by Country 1962-1991; 1971-1987.

The records were collected by Milton J. Olson (1971-1977) and James E. Henneberger (1978-1987), secretaries for Latin America and the Caribbean for the Division for World Mission and Ecumenism (DWME) of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). The files contain correspondence, reports, grant information, pamphlets and booklets, and minutes from committees and national church bodies. They are arranged by country or area and then alphabetically within each country. There are large groupings of information for Argentina, the Caribbean, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Haiti, Peru, and Uruguay, with smaller amounts of information about work in Bolivia, Brazil, Central America, Colombia, El Salvador, Jamaica, Latin America, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Suriname, Trinidad, and Venezuela. Additional files on Argentina can be found under LCA 28/5/2, LCA 28/5/2/1, and LCA 28/5/2/2. Additional files on Chile can be found under LCA 28/5/4 and LCA 28/5/4/1. Additional files on Guyana can be found in LCA 28/5/5, LCA 282/5/5/1, and LCA 28/5/5/2. Additional files on Peru can be found in LCA 28/5/6. The remainder of the files are mostly the record of individually funded projects. Much of the information in these files has to do with the proposed projects, reports of the projects, and the grants related to them. Many files have the letters SFM attached. SFM indicates that the project was a part of specially designated funding in the LCA, although the meaning of the acronym is never spelled out. Other projects may have been a part of the SFM, but were so designated. The SFM was frequently handwritten on typed copies of grant descriptions. The files arranged by area (Caribbean, Latin America, and Central America) contain information on several countries within each area and frequently deal with work done by inter-Lutheran or inter-confesssional groups. A few of the files extend beyond the life of the LCA. Henneberger continued to serve these areas after the formation of the ELCA.
