Box 1 contains general correspondence related to the India mission field and documents relating to the Hermannsburg Mission Society and Hermannsburg Evangelical Lutheran Mission. the Hermannsburg records were originally kept in volumes held together with string. The file title lists the volume number and the title printed on the cover of each volume. Where there was no title listed, the processor has supplied a title, indicated by brackets. Also in Box 1 are minutes, in German, from the mission field. Box 2 contains a few random issues of mission periodicals, reports, and statistics of the work of the India Conference arranged chronologically, and general subject files arranged alphabetically. There is nothing to indicate what office originally collected these files.

Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio.
