Consultations and Seminars 1975-1987.

The director of interpretation of the Division for World Mission and Ecumenism (DWME) of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) was responsible for arranging consultations and study seminars for small groups of interested individuals. Arthur O.F. Bauer served as director from 1964-1987. The consultations were provided for synod leaders of mission committees. Although these began in 1967, the consultation files begin with 1978. The consultations enabled the DWME to provide a variety of mission speakers rather than having just one staff member attend the synod's mission committee meetings. Most of the study seminars were in the form of tours to mission work in other countries. Some visited already established mission projects; some visited areas in which work was being considered; a few were organized around a specific project, such as expatriate ministry, ecumenism, and hunger. Most of the seminars were open to anyone who wanted to participate, although a few targeted specific groups, such as youth. Box 1 contains the consultation files as well as a file on a mission breakfast held in conjunction with the LCA convention in 1980 and a statement of DWME policy prepared at the request of the Management Committee of the DWME in 1981. The remainder of the files are seminar files. Both consultation and seminar files are arranged chronologically. They contain promotional material, lists of participants and resources, itineraries, applications, budgets, evaluations, and correspondence. Several are noted to have been for youth participants. Several are also noted to have been canceled, usually due to lack of registrants. There were seminars held in Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, China, Central America, Cuba, East Africa, Eastern Europe, Europe, India, Japan, Latin America, South Africa, Southeast Asia, and West Africa.
