Project Files 1965-1987; 1972-1987.

The files were collected by John M. Mangum. Mangum served under several titles as staff involved with planning for the Board of World Missions of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) from 1963-1972 and director for planning of the Division for World Mission and Ecumenism (DWME) of the LCA from 1972-1987. The records contain files related to mission projects funded by DWME. The files seldom relate to the established, ongoing work of LCA mission. Rather, they deal with special projects, such as literacy, media, theological training, and ecumenical efforts. The files have been divided as follows: project descriptions (Boxes 1 and 2), general projects (Box 2), ecumenical projects (Box 3), and projects by country or geographic area (Boxes 4-10). A few files originated with the Board of World Missions (BWM), the predecessor of the DWME, although all but one of these continued after the DWME began. The project descriptions were compiled and printed annually by Mangum. Each project listed a title, time period, project manager, and project describer (person or agency reporting). Target audience, inter-Lutheran involvement, inter-church involvement, research and studies, activities, and interpretation could be reported when applicable. In addition there were written statements of each project's objectives, a situation analysis (statement of background and need), and budget figures. There are no project descriptions included for 1976-1984. The general projects include such things as celebrations, seminars, and conferences. They also include studies on missionary policy, recruitment, interpretation, and termination. The ecumenical projects, in addition to individual projects with varied groups on a one-time basis, include several projects each with the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), National Council of Churches of Christ USA (NCC), and World Council of Churches (WCC). Mangum served as DWME liaison with the LWF and WCC and, as director for planning, related to projects of the NCC that which included Lutheran participation or funds. The remainder and bulk of the files contain projects arranged alphabetically by country or geographic area. These files contain rationale for the projects and budget amounts granted by the DWME. The dates of a file may cover a slightly longer period than the actual funding. The records may include correspondence before the project began or there may be a gap in dates between an initial funding and a later funding of the same project. There is some overlapping of ecumenical activity between the country and the ecumenical files. The general project files, ecumenical project files, and country project files were all listed as inactive activity files upon receipt in the archives. It is to be presumed that the files were transferred because the projects were completed or, if not, that LCA funding was no longer in place, and that the projects were not carried over to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
