Earl Sandvig papers, 1923-1973.

Collection provides first hand information about the inner workings and conflicts in the U.S. Forest Service and the concern that its employees had for protecting natural resources; documents the ongoing conflict between the stockmen and ranchers of the West and the Forest Service; includes grass measurement devices and fire danger gauges used by Sandvig.

Born in May 1898, Sandvig began his career as a grazing assistant in Montana. By 1944 he was the Assistant Regional Forester for Region 2, which encompasses Colorado and Wyoming. In 1951 Sandvig was transferred to a Forest Service position in Oregon where he remained after his retirement; he died in February 1994. From the description of Earl Sandvig papers, 1923-1973.
