Ben Brown World War II Drawings Collection [graphic] / Ben Brown. 1943-1945.

The collection contains work in graphite, colored pencil, pen and ink, pastel, and watercolor and includes images of soldiers and their daily lives as well as images of the towns and countryside they passed through in both Italy and North Africa. Brown drew his fellow soldiers constantly, showing them working, traveling, eating, playing cards, drinking, fighting and sleeping. The collection contains a large number of sketches aboard a transport ship, showing the cramped quarters that soldiers endured while at sea.

Ben Hurwitz, who changed his name to Ben Brown after the war, was born in 1921 in the Bronx, New York. He studied art at the High School of Music and Art in New York and the University of Iowa before enlisting in the United States Army in 1942. He served in World War II from 1943 to 1945, and was stationed in North Africa and Italy.
