Records of the Department of Military Affairs, 1945-1974.

This record group consists of two sets of records of the Michigan National Guard collected by the Public Information Division of the Michigan Department of Military Affairs. The first set of records are the subject files (1947-1974). These contain materials generated or collected by the Adjutant General and his staff on matters relating to the Michigan military, particularly the National Guard. The bulk of the collection consists of newspaper clippings that describe activities of the state's armed forces. The remainder of the documents deal with topics of special interest to the Department of Military Affairs, with the most revealing subjects being the Civil War, Detroit Riot and historical statistics. The second group of records are photographs (ca. 1960-1967). These consist of about 1,200 pictures taken by military photographers pertaining to general emergencies in the state such as tornados or riots, and prints of the training exercises at Camp Grayling.
