General description of the collection: The Rowe papers consist primarily of material relating to D-Day (June 6, 1944) in the form of research papers and files for his unpublished book, NEPTUNE'S FIRST WAVE. Rowe wrote from the perspective of the officers and men who were in the first wave of the beach assault and the naval personnel who put them ashore. He intended to submit the book to a publisher in September 1991, but died before the work was complete. The heart of the collection is the approximately 100 interviews that Rowe conducted with D-Day veterans between 1986 and 1991. Ninety-two audio recordings of interviews are present in the collection. Additionally, Rowe collected published and unpublished material including forty contemporary combat interviews by military historian Forrest C. Pogue, and later interviews by 2nd Ranger Battalion historian Louis Lisko. Rowe also collected military documents of all types; unit rosters, after action reports, war diaries, message files and logs, strategic and tactical analyses, maps, and unit histories. Also present are numerous newspaper and magazine articles and book excerpts dealing with D-Day. There are approximately forty photographs and copies of images in the collection.
