The election that transpired in 1979 within the Transport Workers Union Local 100 produced many papers that present a picture of rank and file organizing efforts which were an active and vibrant part of the TWU. Though most of the collection is comprised of campaign circulars, there are records which reflect the efforts of the Health and Safety Committee to bring to the attention of union leadership the grievances of rank and file workers. Though there is little correspondence, the larger picture is presented through the many memoranda and circulars distributed to local union members stating the intents of the rank and file candidates running for office on the various slates. The Health and Safety Committee was interested in Communication Workers of America Local 1101 circulars and newsletters as models. Thus there are several CWA folders. Of special interest are original cartoon drawings by Mary Titus that were used in the election circulars. Contract reprints, by-laws and petitions are also present in the collection.

McDonald enlisted in Company F, 6th Michigan Infantry in March 1864 in Charlotte (Eaton County, Mich.) at the age of 22. He was mustered in April 1864 and transferred to Company H in May 1864. He died of disease at Fort Gaines (Ala.) on June 10, 1865 and is buried in the National Cemetery at Mobile (Ala.), Grave No. 602. Joseph Gayol, an electrical car maintenance worker, became interested in the rank and file movement in 1978. In anticipation of the 1979 elections, Gayol joined with nine other rank and file transit workers of the 207th Street Shop. They collected grievances as evidence that the Transit Authority and Transport Workers Union leaders were delinquent in providing adequate attention and protection to the transit workers.
