Doris June Waugh Betts was a white North Carolina author and Alumni Distinguished Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was born 4 June 1932 in Statesville, N.C., and graduated from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, N.C. The Carolina Publishing Institute, sponsored by the Division of Continuing Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was held each summer from 1993 to 1996.
