Thanks Markham for the copy of "Lincoln and other Poems". She syas that she was so touched by the poem when he read it last week in church that she wanted a copy of her own. Paul Sperry often talsk about Markhm to her and her husband.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
