Tells Markham that he was a farmer in Kansas. He came to Staten Island in 1914 to see where he lives because he likes his writings. He goes on to tell the story how he met him. Talks about politics and the war. He lost his leg in battle. Original envelope included.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
