[Smith / Dinsmoor family correspondence, 1793-1833].

The bulk of the letters were written to either John or Robert Smith of New Chester and Bristol, NH. There are five letters, 1793-1804, by Silas Dinsmoor. The subject of Silas' letters includes the death of father, views on female education, and descriptions of his activities as Agent to the Cherokee and Choctaw Indians. There are five letters, 1808-1833, from Samuel Smith of Hinds County, Miss. The subject of Samuel's letters include the "destruction of a part of our little family by the explosion of gun powder", a cholera epidemic, and the new state constitution. There are three letters, 1818-1821, from Daniel D. Smith in Edwardsville, Ill. The subject of Daniel's letters includes the death of his wife Betsey Todd Smith during childbirth (he includes a lock of her hair), and his duties as recorder of deeds for Pike Co., Ill. (the collection includes a 1825 letter with newspaper clippings describing the murder of Daniel D. Smith). There are single letters by E. Sawyer in Cayuga County concerning the death of "our father" and by William Dinsmore in Boston, Mass. concerning the death of his sister, Robert Smith's mother.
