Hayden knows that Markham is promoting his election to the Poetry Society and appreciates all he is doing and the honor. Hayden was elected the Vice President of the American Unitarian Associate. He had a session with WitterBynner. He sent Markham a copy of a Red Cross piece. Thanks Edwin for the corrections on his poem and wishes he could come to California.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
