Minutes, 1781.

Minutes of meetings of the Board of General Officers in New York, August - December 1781. The board considered the costs to the Army of hired vessels, wagons, etc., and investigated whether money could be saved by placing the whole business under Government under the direction of a Board of Works. The volume has among other items a return of men, women and children in the British regiments victualled in New York, in the Civil Department and in foreign regiments, with muster roll of assistants, overseers, coopers, laborers, artificers in various departments and where employed, and covers Brooklyn and New York; also list of vessels, giving names of masters, and a comparative view of the expenses in different departments of the Army from December 17, 1775 to December 5, 1781, under Sir William Howe and Sir Henry Clinton. This document was published as vol. 49 of the Collections of the New-York Historical Society, New York: the society, 1916.

Sir Henry Clinton was the son of Admiral George Clinton (c.1685-1761) and grandson of Sir Francis Fiennes Clinton, 6th Earl of Lincoln. His father was Governor General of Newfoundland, 1732-1741, and of New York, 1741-1751. Rather than follow his father into the navy, Sir Henry embarked on a military career.
