General description of the collection: The Ryukyus Commanders papers include general officers' and officers' oral histories; transcripts of interviews of personnel who served as or with the High Commission of the Ryukyus; individual interviewees include Lieutenant Generals James B. Lampert, Ferdinand Unger, Albert Watson II and Colonel William F. Schless. This series of four interviews describes the role of the High Commissioner of the Ryukyus from August 1964 to May 1972. The internal political problems of that era as well as the three hat position of the high commissioner are discussed in detail. The logistical importance of Okinawa to the operations in Vietnam, the political problems (in Okinawa) resulting from the presence of U.S. B-52 bombers and nuclear submarines, the problems resulting from the storage and ultimate removal of chemical weapons all receive emphasis. Each high commissioner discusses his relationship to the governments of Okinawa and Japan and political problems including labor problems during his tenure. The movement toward reversion to control of Okinawa as a prefecture of Japan and the problems relating thereto are a significant part of these interviews.
