Carroll and Edwin are trying to understand the sudden departure of their friend Mr. Bierce and his Leigh to Washington. He assumes when Bierce has time he will let them know why. Carroll would like to see Edwin.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
