California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Lilian Whiting (1847-1942) was an American writer, editor, activist and journalist. Born in Niagara Falls, N. Y., Whiting is best known for being one of the first women to edit a newspaper, and for writing the first biography of Kate Field. Her newspaper credits include literary editor of The Boston Traveler and editor in chief of The Boston Budget. She was also active in the cause of women's suffrage.
