Collection documents the academic and research activities of anthropologist Jacques Jerome Maquet and includes: correspondence, course and lecture files, field notes, film, photographic prints and slides, publications, research proposals, speeches and presentations, subject files, and publications. Field notes include Buddhist monastic communities in Sri Lanka (1973-1988). Photographs were taken during Maquet's affiliation with the Institute for Scientific Research in Central Africa (IRSAC) and document Maquet's research the Belgian Congo (Zaire), Rwanda, and Nigeria (1954-1966). Photographs also document Maquet's visits to India, Sri Lanka (c.1981-1988), Japan (1968; 1983), and to the Hopi and Mescalero Apache communities in the American Southwest (1958). Film (16mm) entitled Rwanda: tableaux d'une feodalité pastorale (1955) directed by Luc de Heusch with scenario and commentary by Maquet.

Jacques Jerome Pierre Maquet was born in Brussels, Belgium on August 4, 1919; JD and PhD University of Louvain (1946, 1948); PhD in social anthropology University of London (1952); DLit in social sciences University of Paris (1973).
